WV to Remove Don Knotts Barney Fife Statue Following Complaints
West Virginia will remove a statue of actor and comedian Don Knotts that is located in his hometown of Morgantown, WV.
Knotts, is best known for his role as Barney Fife, the bumbling deputy on The Andy Griffith show. His film roles include ‘The Ghost and Mr. Chicken’, ‘The Apple Dumpling Gang’, & ’The Incredible Mr. Limpet’. Knotts was also a trained Shakespearean actor and won a Tony award for his portrayal of Othello.
Barney Fife
It was his role as Barney Fife, however, that caused many protestors to demand the statues removal. “Barney Fife, was a nervous, twitchy little man with an itchy trigger finger” said protestor Joanne Miller. “He was dirty. He was always sniffling, so he was probably on cocaine or hopped up on goofballs or something. Basically Barney was always looking to shoot someone with his one bullet. Thank God Andy was there to control this madman or Goober or Otis might have gotten shot. I bet he was racist too, if there were ever any black people on the show we would have known.”
Barney was written up many times and was an incident waiting to happen. After numerous misfires, Andy restricted Barney to carrying his gun unloaded, with only one bullet in his shirt pocket, “in case of an emergency.” However, Barney tends to load his gun unnecessarily, and often ends up firing it into the floor, the ceiling, or his own gun holster.

Following the news of the statue removal, furious Andy Griffith fans responded by writing angry posts on social media. Cindy Spivak posted in an Andy Griffith fan group, “This is an outrage, Barney Fife is a fictional character. What’s next!? ‘Car 54 Where Are You?’, ‘Barnaby Jones’, ‘Murder She Wrote’, ‘Matlock’!? This is my Pearl Harbor. I demand a civil war now!”

Hello I was appalled at the suggestion of taking down Mr. Don Knotts statue. Like someone mentioned in another response. It was a TV show in which I still watch to this day and I am BLACK. There were black people on the Andy Griffith show as extra and it was the sixties. If I seem upset I am. Barney was one of the funniest person on the show. Please get a LIFE for whoever started this about his statue.

I think the issue is one of confusion for people who don’ comprehend reality from fictions, and actors playing roles in such an iconic manner at a certain place and time in history. Don Knotts characters were uncanny mirroring of actual people as he immersed himself into each character. He was and his legacy is priceless. A real historic treasure for the USA to hold dearly in our pages of time.

I’m white and I was denied college and a job because of my skin. Grew up poor a busted my behind to get excellent grades. Omg, this is so ridiculous, these people are sick!!! I worked in a toy store up on Hollywood Blvd, Don knotts worked with a theater group upstairs, producing and directing their play. He was a very nice person helping and working with this theater group, not hopped up on anything. This was a few years after the Andy Griffith show.

Mr. Don Knott’s was a superb actor respected by many. Neither the Andy Griffith show itself or any other cast member on the show including Andy Griffith, won an Emmy. The exception to this was Francis Bavier (Aunt Bea) who won ONE, and Don Knots, (Barney Fife), who won FIVE EMMYS.

If you really want a liberal shock let the people of West Virginia vote on removing the Don Knotts statue. Most are diehard Republicans. The same political party as Abraham Lincoln the president that freed all of the slaves in the rebelling state, when he signed into law the amancipation proclamation.
West Virginia left the Confeterate union June 23 1863 because it did not agree with the slavery that was the policy of Virginia at the time. The two primary reasons for the Civil War were
1.) States Rights many of the rebelling states felt the Federal Government had over stepped their authority, passing Federal laws that directly affected state citizens and crossed the moral laws of the individual states and existing state laws
2.) Slavery: The United States Congress passed a law in 1808 prohibiting the importation of African Or any other Race of people from their native countries into the United States for the purpose of slavery. This forced the slave holders to breed the female slaves and raise the children each 15 to 20 years as a new generation of American born slaves. On June 23 1863 the western and northern counties of Virginia had more poor mountain farmers that could have never been able to afford to buy a slave. Their moral beliefs were more in line with the people of Ohio and Pennsylvania. I was lucky enough to have known my grand parents and great grand parents. I have always loved history and spoke to all of them to get as many different aspects as I could to understand why they chose to separate.

While Barney was bumbling and always quick to pull his gun and wanting to use excessive police measures the main character, Sheriff Andy Taylor, preferred patience and reason as a way to deal with the residents of Mayberry. In fact there’s an episode where the new mayor complains about Andy not wearing a gun. Andy replies that that the police in England don’t carry guns. Time and again Andy’s community based approach to policing proves to be the best way as opposed to Barney’s shoot first ask questions later style. So while the author of this silly satirical piece may think they’re being clever they’re actually purposely overlooking the positive message the show has . In fact perhaps all police forces across America should be required to watch the Andy Griffith show in an effort to reduce over zealous policing!

Andy Griffin had to fight with writers an producers every week to keep the show from being about small southern town stereotypes. He always maintained that show be about caring and love. Blacks were often seen in the background because that’s where they were forced to be in reality. I don’t know if Andy was a racist or not, but he and the producers managed to get blacks in the show no matter how short or quick the scenes were. How many other shows tried to do that during that time period. There are few shows today that have the heart of that show and despite his ineptitude Barney Fife was a gem in TV at the time. Even though thete were no black actors who were regulars, there episodes with black people walking the street or in a crowd. There are even two young black men in the episode with Earnest T. I just find it amazing how this all happens during a pandemic. People who want to run around tearing down statues need to practice social distancing go home and take care of their families. I’ve been trapped in this house for 3 months now because I’m high risk and this is what I have to watch on TV. I’ve been looking at this same stuff for 60 years. I remember a tank being parked in front of my house in 1968. Mom sent me out with a pitcher of ice water and an arm full of cups. No one asked the color of the guardsmen. As for all the other statues that are being torn down an destroyed, thats part of our history, whats next destroy all the history books that teaches our kids about our countrys beginnings ?
