Joey Ramone & Chrissie Hynde Attend Prom Together 1968
It’s a little known fact that singers Joey Ramone and Chrissie Hynde attended prom together in 1968.
The 17 year old future rock stars met at a resort in The Catskill Mountains during the summer of 1967 and hit it off. Chrissie and her parents were vacationing for the summer at ‘Kellermans’ resort, and Joey was working there as a ceramics teacher. The duo had a summer romance and kept in touch as pen pals.
Ohio
Joey saved his ceramics teacher money and in early 1968 took a greyhound bus to Ohio to visit Chrissie. Joey paid his brother Mickey $5 to dress in a Gorilla costume and deliver a singing telegram to invite Chrissie to prom while Joey hid in the bushes. Chrissie could not resist the sweet invite and gladly agreed to go to the Prom with Joey.
The pair had matching plaid, flowery, 1960’s, Prom Dress and Tuxedo that Joey’s mother made out of the family curtains.
Joey and Chrissie had a great time at Prom. They slow danced to songs of the day by ‘1910 Fruitgum Company’ and Percy Sledge. Joey and Chrissie were named King and Queen of The Prom and joined the band for a duet on the Sonny & Cher classic, “I Got You Babe”. They smooched to ‘Hurdy Gurdy Man’ by Donovan before getting blackout drunk and thrown out. Joey puked and fell asleep while Chrissie got arrested and kicked the window out of the police car.
The lovebirds went their separate ways after Prom. They wrote letters for a few months but then lost touch. They ended up running into each other once again in London when The Ramones were playing at The Roundhouse in 1976. The pair remained friends forever.
