Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke is slated to play Alfred E Neuman in a new Mad Magazine biopic. Oscar-and Emmy-winning director Jessica Yu (“Fosse/Verdon,” “Quiz Lady”) will direct the “What, Me Worry?” movie about the 70+ year-old iconic humor brand.

The film’s complete title is “What, Me Worry: The MADness of Alfred E. Neuman”.  It promises to be a comedic rollercoaster that delves into the mischievous world of MAD Magazine, and who better to embody the freckle-faced, gap-toothed icon than the man known for his hauntingly beautiful falsetto?

Thom Yorke & Mad Magazine

The film’s director, a self-proclaimed MAD Magazine superfan, gushed about Yorke’s commitment to the role. “Thom has fully embraced the essence of Alfred. He’s been perfecting the iconic dopey ear-to-ear grin and even had freckles tattooed on his face for authenticity. Of course he came into the role with a strong resemblance to Alfred including the lazy eye. It’s clear he’s taking this role very seriously, or not seriously at all, which is exactly what we need for this project.”

In short, Mad Magazine first started in the 1950s and became a staple of American satire for generations and encouraged readers to question authority. The magazine was chock full of irreverent, independent, and often incisive humor. In reality Every comedian who grew up in the 1950s through the 1980s cites Mad Magazine as a major influence.

Creep

The movie is already causing controversy. A trailer features a fully nude Thom Yorke singing Radiohead’s signature song “Creep”. “The world needs Alfred E Neuman and full frontal nudity“ explained Yorke. The trailer continues with Alfred walking down the street like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Yorke sings into the camera, “I’m a Creep, I’m a Weirdo, What the hell Am I doin’ here? I don’t belong here”.

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher commented, “That is an insult to Alfred E Neuman. Thom and by the way is it pronounced Thom or Tom? Why is there an H in his name? Anyway Alfred is way too handsome to be portrayed by Thom. Although Thom has acting experience, he played that inbred little freak in the movie Deliverance.”
