Steve Perry Forms New Version of Journey with K-pop Band
Singer Steve Perry has formed a new version of Journey backed by an unknown Korean Pop band. Various original members have been jockeying for position and ownership of the band in recent years. Original guitarist Neal Schon currently has control of the Journey name and has been touring.
At first Journey was formed in San Francisco in 1973 by Santana alumni Neal Schon on lead guitar and Gregg Rolie on keyboards and lead vocals. The band had little success. The band’s debut album was released in April 1975, entering the Billboard Hot 100 charts at number 138. The next album did even worse peaking at #200. They were given an ultimatum by the record company. Either get a frontman and make some hits or hit the road.

As a result, Journey hired Steve Perry as their new lead singer on October 10, 1977. Their first album with Perry, “Infinity” went to #21 and contained the hits “Lights” and “Wheel in the Sky”. The next album, “Evolution” peaked at #20 and gave the band their first top 20 hit with “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’, Gropin’”. Greg Rolie left the band stating “I don’t like success. I much prefer playing local bars. That’s why I left Santana when we were still jamming in Bill Graham’s basement.” Rolie was replaced by Jonathan Cain. Journey went on to sell 100 billion records globally and of course recorded “Don’t Stop Believin’” which was featured during the series finale of The Sopranos and has been mutilated by more crappy cover bands than any other song.
Eventually Steve Perry left the band and Journey went on hiatus in 1987. In 2007, Schon discovered Filipino singer Arnel Pineda singing “Faithfully” on youtube. Schon fell in love instantly and sent Pineda a 1 way ticket to Los Angeles. He has been the lead singer for Journey ever since.
American Idol
Over the years there has been fighting and lawsuits over this and that. Basically Journey had become a laughing stock. After witnessing the publicity Def Leppard received from having a one armed drummer, Schon immediately hired a no armed drummer. At the same time Keyboard player Jonathan Cain formed his own version of Journey featuring American Idol hero William Hung.
Basically Perry filed a lawsuit claiming Schon and Cain were cheating him out of merch royalties or something. They were selling F*ck Steve Perry T-Shirts and keeping all the money. Perry dropped the lawsuit but then announced he is forming his own version of Journey.
Steve Perry’s Journey
“I am officially forming my own version of Journey” said Perry. “They replaced me with a guy they found on youTube so I am replacing them with a Korean Pop band I found in a ladyboy bar in Bangkok. They are awesome, they were playing Don’t Stop Believing in a seedy bar in Thailand. Their name was ‘Lee Ho Phuk’. I went up and sang a few songs with them and packed them up and flew them back to the states. I found my Journey.” Steve Perry’s Journey will be touring this year and recording new music.
