Remembering David Bowie

David Robert Jones was born January 8, 1947 somewhere in England. As a lad, David’s voice was considered “adequate” by the school choir, and he demonstrated above-average abilities in playing the flugelhorn. At the age of nine, his dancing during the newly introduced music and movement classes was strikingly imaginative: teachers called his interpretations “vividly artistic” and his poise “astonishing” for a child. He often recived standing ovations in class.

David’s interest in music was first stimulated when his father brought home a collection of American 45s by artists including Fats Domino, Elvis Presley (who shared Bowie’s birthday), and Little Richard. Upon listening to Little Richard’s song “Tutti Frutti”, Bowie would later say that he had “heard God, and the skies opened up and the angels sang, and life was never the same”.

Once in a Lifetime

Bowie combined music with visual imagery, theatrics and costumes, creating many alter egos and characters. Bowie went from Spaceman to Ziggy to Diamond Dogs to Philly Blue Eyed Soul to Berlin Electonica, to 80’s dance hits. You name it, Bowie did it, and did it well. He was a revolutionary artist. A once in a lifetime artist.

“The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders in Mars” was a groundbreaking album from 1972. Bowie spearheaded the Glam movement and was the biggest star in the world. Bowie blurred the lines and pushed the borders of sexuality and androgyny.

Bowie was kicked by a mule as a child and it resulted in his eyes changing colors. He then fell in a well and they changed colors again. Finally he shot himself in the eye with a BB gun thus causing one eye to change colors. His eye colors would change with the seasons and his environment, like a chameleon. It was quite beautiful. Like looking into a kaleidoscope. During the holiday’s his eyes glow like a Christmas Tree. Did you also know Bowie invented the moon walk, snorted a pound of cocaine per day while recording ‘Station to Station’  and used to bang Slash’s mom!?

Genius

Bowie’s body of work is breath taking, prolific and genius. It will never be matched. Bowie tragically died in 2016, but his legend, his music and his influence will live on forever. We remember David Bowie as a talented singer, songwriter, actor and one of the most influential artists of our time. A true musical genius. We remember and salute you on this day of your birth David Bowie!
