The Book titled, “The ABC’s of Rock n Roll Debauchery” was written by Ronan Farrow who has been known to uncover many a scandal. The book begins innocently enough in 1969 when the fresh faced Bert & Ernie are first paired together. It quickly gets ugly as the duo is pulled into the celebrity lifestyle.

As their fame grew, Bert & Ernie became the darlings of the New York scene. They hung out with Andy Warhol, Lou Reed, and David Bowie. They sunk into a haze of drugs, glam, ambiguity and regret. Every night they were burning the candle at both ends. During the latter part of the 70s they were regulars at Studio 54. Dancing the night away and going straight to work.

Oscar the Grouch recalls one low point when Ernie was so hungover, that he vomited into Oscar’s garbage can. “It was quite revolting” said Oscar. “They really changed. They were such nice guys in the beginning. But then Bert became sullen, grouchy and moody. Ernie started hanging out with Joe Walsh and destroying hotel rooms. Those 2 idiots once threw Big Bird’s nest into a swimming pool. They were out of control.”

Rock n Roll Royalty

Over the years they partied with the best of Rock n Roll royalty. Keith Richards, Ozzy, Marilyn Manson, Lemmy, Billy Idol, Guns N’ Roses, you name them and Bert & Ernie partied hard with them. The good times came to an end when in 1999, Ernie was found naked in the trunk of a car in Bangkok. Bert flew to his friend’s side and the duo immediately checked into the Betty Ford clinic. They will soon be celebrating their 25th year of sobriety.
