Neil Young to Star in Musical Remake of Brokeback Mountain
Neil Young is set to star in an updated remake of the classic movie “Brokeback Mountain’.
The movie will be directed by Daryl Hannah, and the new version has been described as a Western Comedy Musical Love Story. More like Brokeback Mountain meets Blazing Saddles meets The Shakiest Gun in the West. The movie stars Young, Willie Nelson and sons Lukas and Micah Nelson.
It is a common story. The movie adaption depicts the complex emotional and sexual relationship between two singing, dancing, thieving cowboys in the old West. Neil Young stars as “Clem”, a flamboyant singing cowboy who meets and falls in love with “Shlomo”, a Jewish Rabbi played by Willie Nelson. This is quite scandalous in the West of the 1800’s, as you could imagine. Hilarity ensues however, as the duo get into many adventures including robbing a train, knocking off a poker game, horse stealing and winning first prize at the Gay rodeo.
There is a wonderful soundtrack as well. Neil Young and The Nelson sons composed all of the music. The song “Shlomo My Love” is rumored to be an Oscar contender. There are plenty of cameos as well. Grace Slick plays the resident madame at the local whorehouse. David Crosby plays snake oil salesman, Cuthbert J. Twillie.
Neil Young and Willie Nelson both have stated that the sex scenes in the beginning were difficult to do. Daryl Hannah found the first scene difficult to film, and has stated she has great respect for the two main actors for their “courage”.
The movie is set to premiere at SXSW and Cannes in 2021. Longtime fan and theater critic, David Goldman said at the previews, “I laughed, I cried, I popped a chubby.”
