Lou Bega Finally Releases Mambo No. 6
The iconic mambo maestro, Lou Bega, finally releases Mambo No. 6. Bega has unveiled his long-anticipated sequel to the classic, “Mambo No. 5.” to a Mambo starved world. The announcement of “Mambo Number 6” sent shockwaves through the music industry. Fans all over the world have been patiently waiting since 1999 for a new Mambo.
For those living under a rock (or those lucky enough to have missed the late ’90s), “Mambo No. 5” was the anthem that had everyone shaking their hips and singing along to a litany of ladies’ names. The song was number 1 all over the world and had people Mambo’ing together in peace and harmony. But now, Bega has returned with a bold new vision, singing different girls names over an old 1970s classic.
Lou Bega Mambo No 6
The most amazing part of this story is that Lou Bega was born in Bavaria. Like most of you, we assumed Lou was born in the Bronx, NY and came from a Puerto Rican family. But no, he was born in Bavaria to an Italian mother from Sicily and a Ugandan father. He did not spend his summer working at a Bodega or Yankee stadium, he grew up in Bavaria, Uganda and Italy and attended German primary school.
Bega could never recapture the success of Mambo No. 5. Bega released 5 other albums over the next 20 years or so which only had limited success in Germany, France & Switzerland. Lou had become the David Hasselhoff of Mambo. With the release of Mambo No. 6, Bega hopes to regain the rest of the world and once again become a world wide sensation.
The original Mambo No.5 was a 1949 song by Cuban musician Perez Prado. Lou took the song, updated it and added some girls names into the mix. In 1999 Bega used names such as Monica, Erica, Rita, Tina, Sandra, Mary and Jessica. For Mambo No 6, Lou has taken the 1970s classic rock Instrumental, “Hocus Pocus” by Focus. He then yodels the names Emma, Olivia, Brittney, Lily and Brooklyn over the melody and chorus. How could this not be an instant classic?
Lou has been thinking about a Mambo No. 6 for many years but felt that the timing was right now. “With all the insanity going on in the world now we could all use some fun. Get up and dance in your underpants. Rock out with your sock out. I have been in touch with George Lucas and if Mambo 6 does well we are going to do a series of prequels. We will record Mambos 1-4 and do a film series around the making of the music.”
