Los Angeles Renames Street in Honor of Charles Manson
California officials have renamed the infamous Cielo Drive in Los Angeles to Manson Drive, in honor of the late psychopath.
10050 Cielo Drive was the street address of a former luxury home in Benedict Canyon, in the west-central part of the Beverly Crest neighborhood of Los Angeles, bordering Beverly Hills, where the Manson Family committed the Tate murders in 1969.
“I am a huge admirer of Charles Manson” said California Governor, Gavin Newsom. “I had his poster on my wall as a kid, and he was a huge part of California’s history. I felt it was a fitting tribute to a great man. I learned a lot from Charlie. He really knew how to scare people into staying in their houses.”
In a statement on his website, Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti called the renaming a way to “ensure that Manson’s legacy is shared for generations to come for Angelenos and visitors alike.”
Manson was originally sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted to life with the possibility of parole after the California Supreme Court invalidated the state’s death penalty statute in 1972. He served his life sentence at California State Prison, Corcoran and died at age 83 in late 2017. Prison officials have also named a shower at Corcoran in honor of Manson.
A Manson statue is scheduled to replace the Abraham Lincoln statue at the state house in Sacramento. A bust of Manson family member ‘Squeaky Fromme’ has been placed at The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Ventura County and a school in El Segundo has been named the ‘Tex Watson’ Charter School.
