Joe Biden Recalls Booing Bob Dylan For Going Electric

During a press conference, Joe Biden drifted off and started to spin some tales from his youth. Biden recalled how on this day in 1965, he personally led the crowd as they booed Bob Dylan for going Electric.

The event in question was The Newport Jazz Festival of July, 1965. Or was it the Folk Festival, or maybe it was the Folk Jazz Festival. Anyway it was a music festival and it took place in Newport, Rhode Island. Dylan was the darling of the Folk scene at the time. Joe Biden was in attendance.

“Like A Rolling Stone” had only been released five days before his appearance at Newport, however, so most in the audience had no idea what lay in store for them. Neither did festival organizers. With Al Kooper on organ and The Paul Butterfield Blues Band backing him, Dylan took to the stage with his Fender Stratocaster and launched into an electrified version of “Maggie’s Farm.” Almost immediately, the jeering and yelling from the audience grew loud enough nearly to drown out the sound of Dylan and his band.

“I could not believe what I was hearing” said Biden. “I came to hear folk music, not have my ears assaulted by Rock n Roll. At the time, I was a big fan of groups like The Weavers, The Letterman, The New Originals, The Folksmen, New Main Street Singers, Mitch & Mickey and of course Peter, Paul and Mary. Puff The Magic Dragon is the greatest song ever recorded, fight me.”

Biden continued, “When I heard that electric sound, I started booing immediately. I got everyone else to boo as well. Then I started throwing bottles and eventually I was flinging my own feces. I hated it, I absolutely hated Rock n Roll, although I do like Barry Manilow and that Springsteen fella from New Jersey.”

“Well anyway, we burned that place to the ground and ran Dylan out of there on the rails. We showed him, I never heard about him again, I wonder what he’s up to. I guess his career never went anywhere after that electric fiasco.”
