Joan Jett Prank Calls Record Execs That Rejected Her
Rocker Joan Jett has an excellent memory. She clearly remembers when 23 different record company executives rejected her when she tried to get a record label to distribute her debut album.
It was 1980 and Joan Jett was looking to have her first solo album distributed. “All these creepy record executives threw me out of the office” said Jett. “They laughed in my face and said girls can’t rock n roll. They told me to go home and play with my barbie dolls. So we said screw it, me and Kenny Laguna started our own record company. I vowed that someday I would get even.”
Joan Jett Prank Calls
Joan proceeded to sell the albums out of the trunk of her car. She would do whatever it took. Her and Kenny would stand on the corner and outside of Yankee stadium chanting get yer red hot albums here. Eventually Joan went on to sell millions of albums. But she never forgot. She never forgot the laughs and the insults.
Jett never forgot the record companies and their lack of compassion. Every February 1st, since “I Love Rock n Roll” went to #1, Jett calls all of the record companies and the executives that rejected her. Jett disguises her voice and plays different pranks. She sometimes asks to speak to Joan Jett and then laughs maniacally. Over the years Jett has: phoned in bomb threats, ordered pizza and Chinese food, pretends to be O.J Simpson, or a hospital telling the executive that a loved one has died. Jett’s favorite prank is to pretend to be local police or the FBI and tell the executive that they found underage porn on their laptop or a dead hooker in the trunk of their car.
“It’s good clean fun” said Joan. “I hope to do this until every last one of these weasels are dead and buried. Then I will spit on their graves.”
