James Hetfield Delivers Fan’s Baby on Stage During Metallica Concert
James Hetfield helped deliver a baby live on stage in front of thousands of Metallica fans. The fan went into labor near the end of the show and gave birth to a baby boy as the band was closing out the night with “Enter Sandman.”
Joice Figueroa who was in the first row, started feeling some contractions at the start of the show but figured they would go away. As the contractions continued and became stronger, Joice did not want to leave the concert because Metallica is her favorite band.
Ain’t No Stopping
As the concert was coming to the end, Figueroa couldn’t hold the baby in any longer. “I heard a loud popping sound” said Hetfield. “Like someone popping a bottle of champagne and I was sprayed with a liquid. I had no idea it was this woman’s water breaking. I could tell by the look on her face that something was not right. That’s when I motioned for security to bring her up on stage.”
Hetfield continued, “I saw the babies head crowning and I knew I had to spring into acton. Security called an ambulance and I went to work. I rolled up my sleeves and got out my forceps that I always carry with me for moments like this. I worked my way through college as a midwife. It was a very easy birth, I just guided the little guy out.”

Hetfield delivered a healthy bouncing 8 lbs, 7 ounce baby boy. He cut the umbilical cord with his teeth and even circumcised the baby. The band then finished the concert with “Enter Sandman” with James covered in blood and afterbirth. Figueroa live streamed the entire incident on social media. She named the baby boy James Hetfield Figueroa after her favorite singer and midwife.
“I love Metallica. In every show I go to, something has to happen, but this time I think I’ve outdone myself,” Figueroa added with a laugh. “When I was 16 I overdosed at a Metallica concert. This baby was even conceived in a van outside a bar where a Metallica cover band was performing.”
