Idris Elba to Star in New Sitcom Based on Ike Turner
NBC has announced that Idris Elba will star in a new sitcom based on controversial musician Ike Turner. The show is titled “Everybody Loves Ike” and will take place mostly in the early 1970s. The show will air as a winter replacement.
The Wonder Years creators, Neal Black and Carol Marlens have joined forced with Phil Rosenberg, the creator of Everybody Loves Raymond. “It is a coming of age story about an abusive 40 year old drug addict musician” said Rosenberg.
Light Hearted Sitcom
“We try to stay away from the more sensitive topics” said Carol Marlens. “The movie ‘Whats Love Got to Do With it’ covered that very well. We are doing a more light hearted sitcom look at Ike’s life. For example, Ike’s parents live across the street and they are always butting in and meddling in Ike’s affairs. It’s Hysterical. This series is more from Ike’s point of view with Tina more of a supporting player. We will also show Ike’s interaction with the children and going to PTA meetings and Parent/Teacher conferences.”
“Then we throw in the events and the fashions of the 1960s and early 1970s” said Neal Black. “The first episode takes place in the summer of 1969. We don’t want to spoil anything but let’s just say Ike is heavily involved with Woodstock, the moon landing, Manson and all that. The show will also do flashbacks when necessary.”
Hilarity Ensues
Tiffany Haddish will play Tina Turner. Leslie Jones will play her sister Bertha Bullock. Hilarity ensues when Ike and Bertha have their frequent squabbles. Pam Grier plays Ike’s mother Foxy Turner and Demond Wilson will play his father Lamont Turner.
There will be a star studded list of celebrity guest stars who will play friends, cousins, band members, drug dealers and assorted beggars and hangers on. The list includes, Dave Chapelle, JB Smoove, Eric Andre, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Hart, Chris Rock and even Eddie Murphy.
