Happy Birthday Steve Winwood
Stephen Lawrence Winwood was born May 12, 1948 somewhere in England. Stevie’s parents, Claude and Minnie, ran an underground nightclub and casino called “Liquor in the Front, Poker in the Rear”.
Claude was also a semi-professional musician, playing mainly the saxophone, flugelhorn and clarinet. At age 4 little Stevie began playing piano. By age 5 he had mastered the piano and started playing drums and guitar. In his spare time he was a choir boy at St. John’s Church of England. In those days, a choir boy was considered one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.
Muff Divers
At the age of 8, Stevie formed a band with his father and his brother Muff, called ‘The Muff Divers’. Since Stevie was too young to appear in clubs he often wore a disguise of glasses, top hat, mustache and a monocle. It fooled them all.
Spencer Davis Group, Gimme Some Lovin, Eric Clapton, Traffic, John Barleycorn Must Die, Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, Blind Faith, Ginger Bakers Air Force, Jimi Hendrix, Higher Love and so much more! Stevie is one of the most soulful, innovative, versatile, singer/songwriter and musicians of all time.
Which Stevie?
Some dummies confuse the 2 musical Stevie’s. Stevie Winwood is white and British – he is not blind or black, you are thinking of the other Stevie you dummy: Stevie Wonder. Although, both Stevie’s are musical geniuses and can basically play all instruments known to man. They can sing/write, play keyboards, drums and the flugelhorn.
Winwood’s primary residence is a 300-year-old manor house in the Cotswolds, England, where he also has a recording studio. Winwood also has a home in Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife, Eugenia Crafton, a Trenton, Tennessee, native whom he married in 1987. They have four children. Cheers Stevie!
