Happy Birthday Roger McGuinn

James Joseph McGuinn III was born July 13, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. He is also known as James Roger McGuinn, Jim McQuinn, The Mighty Quinn, Jimmy James, Buck Tooth Jimmy, Roger Mudd and Pork Salad Jimmy.

McGuinn formed The Byrds in Los Angeles, California in 1964 along with fellow bandmates, Gene Clark, Michael Clarke, Chris Hillman and the big pain in the ass, David Crosby.

The Byrds were known for their harmonies and jangly guitars. McGuinn made the 12 string Rickenbacker sound famous, and it was emulated by many, most notably, Tom Petty. “Mr. Tambourine Man”, “Turn, Turn, Turn”, “Eight Miles High” and so many more hits. The Byrds are also credited with starting Country Rock with their 1968 album, “Sweetheart of the Rodeo”.

McGuinn became involved with Subud spiritual association in 1965 and there was some nonsense about the letter “R”.  The founder, Babjak, convinced him to change his name to Roger. Roger was married 7 times to 9 different women and has converted to evangelical Christianity. He is now thinking about changing his name to Kevin.

  1. Happy Birthday Mr. McGuinn. Thank You for your beautiful music throughout the years. May GOD MOST HIGH continue to bless you and your family. It will be glorious to hear your voice and Heavenly Twelve-String praising the KING of KINGS in HIS Kingdom. I have been digging you since I was eight years of age in that wonderful music-year 1965. And now more than ever. If you get an opportunity, please extend my thankful regards to your friend, Mr. Dylan, I pray also for him and his family. His musical poetry has been of tremendous help to me, as it has for many other folks. Thanks again, your brother in Yeshua, David D. Wherry.{Gershom}
