Mike Ness

Happy Birthday

Michael James Ness
April 3, 1962
Lynn, Massachusetts

Mike Ness was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on April 3, 1962. His family relocated to Orange County, California later that year, and he grew up roaming the streets of Fullerton. He was kicked out of his father's home in Fullerton at age 15.

During his early years, he was raised on the blues, country and early rock n' roll. As he drifted around Orange County, Ness became involved in the punk rock scene.

Ness formed Social Distortion and released "Mommy's Little Monster" in 1983. The album was critically acclaimed, being called the epitome of California Punk Rock. Social Distortion was a huge influence on bands such as "Rancid" and "The Offspring".

Mike Ness battled and eventually overcame a serious Heroin addiction. Ness has been clean and sober since 1985.
Fresh and clean, Social D released "Prison Bound" in 1988. The album expanded on "Mommy's Little Monster" by adding elements of Country, Rockabilly & Rock n Roll.

In 1989, Social Distortion signed a deal with Epic Records and released three albums: Social Distortion (1990), Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell (1992) and White Light, White Heat, White Trash (1996).

With each album, the band grew and produced an impressive catalog of classic songs: "Ball & Chain", "Story of My Life", "Ring of Fire", "Born to Lose", "I Was Wrong" and many others.

Childhood friend and founding member of Social Distortion guitarist Dennis Danell died on February 29, 2000 at 38 due to a brain aneurysm. Ness was devastated by the loss.

Ness has led a troubled tumultuous life, but is now settled. Ness is happily married with kids and enjoys a relaxing vegan lifestyle in California.

Ness has been a great innovator and a huge influence on the Punk Rock scene. With his slicked back hair, Gibson Les Paul slung low and full sleeve of tattoos, Ness is one bad ass cat.
