Happy Birthday Jack White

John Anthony ‘Dobie’ Gillis was born July 9, 1975 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the youngest of 17 kids in a large catholic family. Gillis became an altar boy, which at the time was one of the most dangerous professions in America.

Gillis was accepted into the seminary and planned on becoming a priest. They would not let him bring his guitar amp, so he dropped out and concentrated on music. When Jack was a senior in High School, he met and married Megan White. In a reversal of tradition, he took her last name. Wait, what!? I thought they were brother and sister!?

How old were you when you learned that Meg and Jack were married and not brother and sister!? I am today year’s old when I learned that myself. The White Stripes formed in 1996 and perpetrated the fraud that they were brother and sister. Jack explained he did that so it would be all about the music and not the relationship. I think the fans could have gotten past the relationship.

The White Stripes broke up and Jack and Meg divorced. Jack formed the Raconteurs, released solo music, acted in some films, produced, got into fist fights with other bands in Detroit, played around with electronics, and listened to a lot of vinyl. Jack collects oddities, and his collection includes Elvis Presley’s toenails, Robert Johnson’s fossilized testicles and James Brown’s vomit.
