Happy Birthday Edie Brickell
Edie Arlisa Brickell was born March 10, 1966 in Dallas, Texas. Her parents, Clem and Squeaky ran a propane store. The number one song on the day Edie was born was …you guessed it…”Sounds of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel.
Young Edie loved riding horses and was active in the 4H club. She was breaking broncos at the age of 4 and won her first rodeo by the age of 7. She was also an excellent target shooter and went by the name “Shotgun Edie”.
Edie started her musical career when she sang with “The New Bohemians” at an open mic night. They performed “Mickey” by Toni Basil and “I Ran” by Flock of Seagulls. The band immediately asked her to join. Six weeks later, the band was signed to a record contract and the label changed the name to “Edie Brickell and The New Bohemians”.
What I Am
Their debut album, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, was a commercial success, and produced the US top 10 hit “What I Am”. The follow-up album, Ghost of a Dog, was less successful. Soon after, the New Bohemians disbanded due to the dim witted generic faceless band members being outraged that the public was more interested in the sexy lead singer than in the chubby drummer.
Edie met Paul Simon when her band was performing on SNL and Simon was hanging around by the ladies room. “It was love at first sight” said Edie, his pickup line was, ‘I like my ladies the way i like my peanut butter… CHUNKY!’ We were inseparable after that and were married three weeks later.”
Ciao Edie
In April 2014, the police arrested Edie and Simon for disorderly conduct in their Connecticut mansion. Brickell told officers she confronted Simon after he came home stinking of liquor and sex. During the argument he shoved her and she slapped him silly. Edie grabbed Simon by the ‘nads with a pliers and then stuffed him into the toilet. He remained wedged in the toilet for 12 hours until the maid, Lupe, heard his cries and freed him. Ciao Edie!
