Happy Birthday David Gilmour
David Jon Gilmour was born March 6, 1946 somewhere in England. His parents names are probably Nigel and Olivia and they love crisps, and bangers and mash.
Young David’s parents encouraged him to pursue his interest in music, and in 1954 he bought his first single, Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock”. His enthusiasm for music was stirred the following year by Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel”, and later “Bye Bye Love” by the Everly Brothers piqued his interest in the guitar. He borrowed a guitar from a neighbour, but never gave it back. That neighbour was Syd Barrett, who later went insane. It is said the theft of his guitar is what slowly drove Barrett mad.
Pink Floyd
David Gilmour joined Pink Floyd in December 1967 and Barrett left in March 1968. From 1968 – 1972, Pink Floyd released 6 Psychedelic/Progressive Albums. The albums did well in the UK, but did not chart at all in the U.S
This all changed in 1973 with the release of “Dark Side of The Moon”. “Dark Side of the Moon” went to #1 everywhere, sold 17 Billion albums and stayed on the charts for all of eternity. Many consider it to be one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Gilmour was a huge part of the album, contributing lead vocals, songwriting and amazing guitar parts.
Floyd released “Wish You Were Here”, “Animals”, and “The Wall”. Tensions in the band between Gilmour and Waters were rising. Yada, yada, Waters left the band. Between me and you, I’m betting Waters is a big pain in the arse.
Comfortably Numb
David Gilmour is an incredible Guitarist, considered by many to be the best. His sound, his tone, his sustain is beautiful. Every note is filled with emotion. His solos are melodic and you can sing along to them. He is a beautiful player. His solo on “Comfortably Numb” is legendary. It brings tears to grown men’s eyes. Happy Birthday and Thank You for the music Sir!
