David Byrne

Happy Birthday

David Horatio Byrne
May 14, 1952

Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

In honor of David's birthday, we will celebrate by giving you some little known facts about the man. Happy Birthday David and thanks for the music sir!

1. Thrown out of the school choir
Young David was thrown out of his middle school choir by the choirmaster Skip Long. Mr Long rudely told young David that he was off key, yelpy and sounded like someone stepped on a cat. "Singing is not for you" said Mr. Long, "maybe you should try a different line of work."

2. Byrne's big suit.
David Byrne’s big suit, worn in the Talking Heads 1983 tour and acclaimed documentary Stop Making Sense (1984)–it’s also on the cover of the associated album, was actually David's father's suit. Mr. Byrne was a big man, he stood about 6 foot 4 and weighed 475 lbs. The ladies in Scotland called Mr. Byrne "Treetop Lover".

3. TED Talks
David Byrne has also been a speaker at the TED Talks conferences. In June 2010, he spoke at the TED conference about the effects of TED Talks on society. David went on to describe how TED Talks are the ruination of society and that it's nothing but a bunch of pompous windbags that want to hear themselves talk. Byrne went on to describe how TED Talks are often recorded and used as sleep aids for people who have trouble sleeping. "Whoever invented TED Talks should be whipped across the neck with a chain" concluded Byrne.

4. Simpson's did it
In The Simpsons episode Dude, Where’s My Ranch? Byrne produces Homer’s song about Ned Flanders. In typical fashion Byrne also tries to make an “extended salsa mix” of the original Flanders’ song, with the lyrics, “¡No nos gusta Flanders! ¡Es un hombre stupido”. Ay caramba.

5. Talking Heads
The name "Talking Heads" could be a term used for people on TV, but David came up with the term when a girl would not shut up as she was fellating David in the men's room of CBGB's. That girl turned out to be Senator Elizabeth Warren.

6. Shave my nads
While at art school in New York, singer David Byrne, in the name of ‘performance art’, once shaved his pubes off on stage with only beer for shaving foam and an accordion for accompaniment. This resulted in a great deal of scrotum bleeding.

We kid David Byrne of course. The man is a musical genius and we love him. Byrne is a singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, artist, actor, writer and filmmaker who was a founding member, principal songwriter and lead singer and guitarist of the American new wave band Talking Heads. Byrne has released solo recordings and worked with various media including film, photography, opera, fiction, and non-fiction. He has received Academy, Grammy, and Golden Globe Awards, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Happy Birthday David!
