Alex Van Halen

Happy Birthday

Alexander Arthur van Halen
May 8, 1953
Amsterdam, Netherlands

Alex Van Halen is the drummer of the band Van Halen. Alex formed the band with his brother, guitarist Eddie Van Halen.

Alexander Arthur van Halen was born in Amsterdam and moved to Pasadena California in 1962. Both Alex and his younger brother, Eddie, are naturalized U.S. citizens.

Both Alex and Eddie Van Halen were trained as classical pianists in their childhood. Although Alex is known as a professional drummer, he began his musical aspirations as a guitarist, with his brother Eddie taking up drums. While Eddie was delivering newspapers to pay for his drum kit, Alex would practice playing on them and rub his nuts on them. After spending time playing Eddie's drum kit, Alex became more skilled at the drums than Eddie was. When Eddie heard Alex's mastery of The Surfaris drum solo in the song "Wipe Out", he decided to learn to play the electric guitar.

Alex Van Halen had several early bands with Eddie before the formation of Van Halen. Names of these previous bands include The Broken Combs, The Space Brothers, The Trojan Rubber Company, and Mammoth.
Eddie and his brother Alex, along with David Lee Roth & Michael Anthony formed "Van Halen". Their debut album was released in 1978 and took the world by storm. To this day, it is still considered one of the greatest debut albums of all time. No one had ever heard guitar playing like Eddie's before. Alex was a monster on the drums. Michael Anthony was solid on bass and contributed some amazing backing vocals. David Lee Roth is one of the greatest frontmen of all time.

"You Really Got Me", "Runnin' With the Devil", "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", "Jamie's Cryin'", "Dance the Night Away", "Everybody Wants Some", "Unchained", "Panama", "Hot For Teacher", "Jump" & "1984"! That is just a small sampling of the masterpieces created by Alex and the Band during the band's heydey from 1978-1985.

The drums on "Hot For Teacher" are one of the most incredible and instantly identifiable drum openings of the last 40 years.

Happy Birthday Alex and Thank You for the music sir!
