Eddie Vedder Pitches 3 Innings For Cubs!
In an effort to make the most of an “awkward, difficult day,” manager Joe Maddon summoned Rock singer Eddie Vedder to pitch the final 3 innings of the Cubs’ 17-2 loss to the Brewers.
“You have to find a bright spot in the day,” said Maddon, who asked Vedder in the fifth inning if he wanted to pitch.
Vedder, lead singer of Pearl Jam, told the manager, the last time he pitched was when he was 12, and it was while playing wiffle ball with his friends. Vedder provided some amusing relief as he threw pitches as slow as 47 mph but managed to record 3 scoreless innings.
“I probably broke a record for slowest pitches,” said Vedder, who received a game ball for his effort.
Vedder is a huge Chicago Cubs fan, but is not listed on the Cubs roster, so it is probably against MLB rules for him to pitch, but no one complained.
In addition to pitching, Vedder sang ‘God Bless America’ during the 7th inning stretch, and also went 2-3 with a triple and stole a base. “Not bad for a Rock Star” said Vedder.
