Cast of Superbad Reunite to Star in New Grateful Dead Movie
Jonah Hill and his “Superbad” cast mates will reunite in a new feature film about The Grateful Dead from Director Martin Scorcese.
Hill will star as The Dead’s leader and guitarist, Jerry Garcia. Michael Cera will play Bob Weir, Christoper Mintz-Plasse who made McLovin famous in Superbad, will appear as bass player Phil Lesh.
SuperDead
The film will be titled “SuperDead” and unlike most rockumentaries and Rock n Roll biopics, The movie will be a juvenile comedy. The screenplay will be written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who also wrote, “Superbad”.
Bill Hader and Seth Rogen will recreate their roles as bumbling cops. They will play the cops that raided the Dead’s Hotel in New Orleans in 1970. The entire band was arrested on drug charges. The raid was made famous in the Dead’s song “Truckin”.
Jonah Hill and Michael Cera will be doing all their own singing and guitar playing. They are studying guitar under the tutelage of Bob Weir and John Mayer. They are working with a vocal coach as well. “Jonah is working incredibly hard” said Scorcese. “He has a natural ability and sings like an angel. And of course you heard Michael Cera sing in Superbad so you know his gifts.”
Beggars & Hangers On
There have been over 450 members of the Grateful Dead over the years, This includes groupies, drug dealers, biker gangs, beggars and hangers on. Of course they cannot all appear in the film. Other key players though including Keith and Donna Godchaux will be portrayed by Martin Starr and Emma Stone. Ron McKernan aka Pigpen will appear via CGI and special effects. Apple is behind the movie and it will feature the Dead’s music. It is set to premier on Apple + in late 2022.
