Bruce Dickinson Lands Plane on Interstate to Promote Iron Maiden Tour
There are promotional stunts and then there are PROMOTIONAL STUNTS! Bruce Dickinson landed a jet airplane on the interstate in Texas to promote Iron Maidens U.S leg of the band’s tour.
Dickinson, Iron Maiden lead singer and licensed pilot landed a Boeing 747 on Interstate 10 in El Paso, Texas. The stunt was to plug the band’s upcoming gig at the Don Haskins Arena. It was also a way to promote Maiden’s fall tour of the United States.
Greatest Stunt of All Time
Dickinson got the idea from watching a clip of The Rolling Stones. “I was going down a rabbit hole on youTube” said Bruce. “Then I came across this clip from The Stones in 1975. It was the greatest promotional stunt of all time. Mick and the boys drove down Broadway in NYC on a flatbed truck. They were jamming to Brown Sugar and then threw out flyers announcing their 1975 Tour of The Americas.”
Dickinson continued, “It was pure genius. I wanted to do something that would outdo even The Stones. So we called a band meeting and we settled on the idea of landing a plane outside the arena. So we loaded up the plane and landed on the I-10 in El Paso, Texas.”
Run To The Hills
The band landed the plane on I-10 and then jumped out of the emergency slide. They ran across the roadway to fsix awaiting ATV’s which they rode to the Haskins Center. Iron Maiden’s iconic song “Run To The Hills” blasted from special extra large speakers mounted under the wings.
Traffic was snarled for hours as police and emergency crews tried to clear the roadway. The band was questioned but no charges were filed as management and publicists smoothed things over by donating a large sum of money to a man in a funny hat.
