Once mocked for his fashion choices or lack thereof, Manilow has now become the trend. In the 1980s classic movie The Breakfast Club, one of the characters, John Bendar snarkily asked the High School Vice Principal Richard Vernon, “Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe”. This was a nod towards the man’s poor choices of leisure suits. Well, all that has changed now.

Without delay The lights dimmed, and the iconic strains of “Copacabana” began to play. Out strutted the first model, donning a yellow and green polyester leisure suit. At this point The audience erupted in applause, some out of genuine admiration, others out of sheer disbelief. One attendee was overheard asking, “Isn’t that the guy that wrote the songs”.

I Write The Songs

A little known fact is that Barry wrote many songs. He wrote jingles such as State Farm, Stuck on bandaids and even the theme song to American Bandstand. However,  Barry did not write ,“I Write The Songs”. As a matter of fact, All of his biggest hits were written by others. “Mandy” was written by someone else and was originally called “Brandy”. “Weekend in New England” written by Randy Edelman. “Looks Like We Made It”? Nope. “Can’t Smile Without You”? Not a chance. Basically It turns out the only hit that Barry actually did write is the insufferable “Copacabana”.

Be that as it may, Manilow did have a hand in creating the new fashion line. “I picked the sweat shop in China all by myself” said Barry. “The beauty of this line is that it can be worn in the boardroom, the bath house or at the Copa”. Social media was ablaze with reactions, ranging from adoration to bewilderment. One X user John Franz commented, “I don’t hate it. If loving a sequin jumpsuit is wrong, I don’t want to be right.”
