Axl Rose to Play Benny Hill in New Biopic
Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose announced today that he will be playing Benny Hill in a new Biopic on the British comedian’s life. Rose has always been a huge fan of Hill. The Biopic will air as a 10 part series on Netflix later this year.
Benny Hill
Alfred Hawthorne “Benny” Hill was an English comedian, actor, singer and writer. He is remembered for his television show The Benny Hill Show. It was an amalgam of slapstick, burlesque and double entendre. The show included live comedy and filmed segments, with Hill at the focus of almost every segment. Hill took his nickname from his favorite comedian Jack Benny.
The Benny Hill Show aired on the BBC from January 1955 until May 1989. At its peak The Benny Hill Show was among the most-watched shows in the UK. The audience reached more than 21 million viewers in 1971. In the late 1970s, the Thames Television version of the show gained a following in the United States and can still be seen today.
Hill’s Angels
Horny boys all over America fell in love with Hill’s sophomoric humor and the chance to see some hot chicks in bikinis. Axl was one of those horny teens who tuned in to see Benny Hill and Hill’s Angels. Hill’s Angels were a crew of scantily clad, buxom women that appeared regularly on the show. The show closed each week with a sped-up chase scene involving Hill and Hill’s Angels accompanied by the instrumental “Yakety Sax” in a send-up on the stereotypical Keystone Cops chase scenes.
“I loved Benny Hill” said Axl. “I spent many a lonely night as a teen simultaneously laughing hysterically and pleasuring myself furiously to The Benny Hill show. Critics accused the show of sexism and objectification of women. However, I will argue that the female characters kept their dignity. It was the men who chased them that were portrayed as buffoons.”
Yo-Yo Ma
Other fans of the Benny Hill Show include, Snoop Dogg, Michael Jackson, Michael Caine, Walter Cronkite, Slash, The Ramones, Yo-Yo Ma, Mike Myers, Mick Jagger, Stephen Hawking and Prince Charles. The new Biopic will feature Slash doing a remake of “Yakety Sax” but on guitar. Hill’s sidekick Jackie Wright who Hill often slapped on top of his bald head will be played by Bret Michaels.
Hill died in 1992 at the age of 68. He led a very frugal life living in a small apartment all his life and eating only canned Spam. Benny never married and had no children so he left his fortune to charity. Hill left $8 million dollars to create a retirement home for Hill’s Angels.
