Peter Murphy

le Poisson Rouge, NYC

Peter John Joseph Murphy aka The godfather of goth is a legend. Whether it was with Bauhaus or his celebrated solo career, Peter Murphy has had audiences in the palm of his hands for the last 30 odd years with his deep baritone voice , eerie melodies and dark lyrics. NYC was lucky enough to host Peter Murphy and his stripped down tour on Friday April 22nd.
Peter showed up to le Poisson Rouge in a cab and was in good spirits waving to the dedicated crowd of fans that erupted into applause.

LPR is on Bleecker St in New York’s famed greenwich village and was packed on this warm Friday night.  Peter hit the stage and delighted the sold out crowd who hung on his every word.
With just 3 musicians on stage , it sounded more like an orchestra.
Peter was accompanied by Emilio Zef China on bass and electric violin and John Andrews on Guitars. China hails from New Jersey and was trained at the Julliard School, and Andrews aka ‘Loudboy’ is a New York City guitarist , singer, songwriter and international session genius.

There is nothing better than being able to view an artist of Murphy’s caliber in an intimate setting and playing acoustic and stripped down versions of his classic songs. Songs such as "Strange Kind of Love" , "Bela Lugosi's Dead;" "Gaslit;" "King Volcano;" "The Rose;" "Marlene Dietrich's Favorite Poem;" "Kingdom's Coming;" "All Night Long;" "Secret" and "Never Fall Out”. They also did amazing covers of David Bowie and Iggy Pop .

Murphy was charming and commanded the stage the entire night. At one point in the show, Peter even called an audience member up on stage to join him in singing “I’ll Fall with your Knife”. It was a magic moment where this fan Doug Desilva from Toms River NJ , was called upon to sing with his childhood hero. Unbeknownst to anyone including Peter, Desilva has been a lifelong fan , and has been singing Bauhaus and Murphy covers since the 80’s.  Desilva delighted the audience and Peter himself as they sang the duet in perfect unison and Murphy even gave the fan a chance to sing the song by himself as the crowd and Peter clapped and looked on in amazement.

It was a perfect night and the crowd of diehard goth fans went away happy as Peter delivered a thrilling, charismatic, moody, seductive journey through his legendary catalog.  It is a show not to be missed and if these talented musicians come to your city, do not miss it.
