Mick Jagger Named as Chief of Cannibal Tribe in Papua New Guinea!

Mick Jagger has received many accolades and awards over his long storied career. However no one expected Mick Jagger to be named Chief of a Cannibal Tribe. Fans were shocked when Mick was named Chief of The Korowai tribe of Papua, New Guinea.

The Korowai Tribe, also called the Kolufo, are a cannibalistic tribe of people who live in Papua New Guinea. They number about 3,000. The Korowai were unaware of the existence of any people besides themselves, before outsiders made contact with them in 1970. British missionaries brought the Korowai western medicine and music, including a copy of the Rolling Stones classic album ‘Sticky Fingers’.  After listening to the album, the tribe elders requested to meet the “Gimigi”, or “Big Lipped God”.

“Sticky Fingers changed my life” said tribe elder statesman Kombai Jayapura. “Brown Sugar, Moonlight Mile, Sister Morphine, and the solo on Sway is epic. There is not a bad song on that album.”

Mick Jagger first met the Korowai in 1974. Jagger spent the summer with the Korawai, learning their customs, singing, writing songs and drinking with the tribe. Most of The Rolling Stones  “Black and Blue” album was written during that time. Within his first year, Jagger had forged friendships with men from the surrounding villages and had already been asked if he wanted to be initiated into the tribe. At first he declined, but Jagger was eventually persuaded and underwent the intense initiation of the Korawai people—a ritual that included having his upper body cut up for 20-40 minutes to create the tribe’s iconic patterned scars.

Tastes Like Chicken

Jagger would spend summers with the tribe when not on tour, and in 1996, Jagger saved the Korawai tribe leader’s 6 year old nephew from being cannibalised by an enemy tribe. For this feat of heroism, Jagger was named to be the tribes consigliore. When the tribe leader died this year, Mick Jagger was named as the tribes new Chief. When asked whether or not he ever ate human flesh, Jagger just smiled and said, “It tastes like chicken”.
